Conservative dentistry is the foundation of a healthy smile. It includes the treatment of cavities, root canal therapy for deep cavities, preventive procedures (fluoridation, sealants, professional dental cleaning), as well as cosmetic tooth restoration.

What does conservative treatment involve?

Is treating tooth decay painful?
No. Thanks to the use of anesthesia, the procedure to treat tooth decay is painless.
How can you tell if you have a cavity?
In most cases, tooth decay is visible. However, the symptoms of early tooth decay can be difficult to notice. These include: white or brown spots on the surface of the enamel, brown, gray, or black discoloration. Advanced tooth decay is noticeable as cavities in the tooth, pain and throbbing in the tooth, and bad breath. Alarming symptoms include sensitivity to hot, cold, sour, and sweet foods, as well as pain when biting down. In some cases, tooth decay can only be seen under high magnification or on an X-ray.
Is a composite filling durable?
Yes, modern composite dental fillings are very durable. Composite materials are flexible and bond well with tooth tissue. Their lifespan depends on many factors, including oral hygiene, diet, and chewing forces, but with proper care, they can last for many years. They are a key element of modern restorative dentistry and represent the aesthetic standard, unlike the amalgam fillings of the past.
What foods should you avoid eating after getting a filling?
After treatment, teeth become sensitive to pressure and sudden temperature changes. Drinking hot tea or cold water could be painful for the patient, while putting pressure on the tooth and the new filling while eating could even potentially damage them. As a general rule, dentists recommend waiting about 1–2 hours, depending on the filling material used and the location of the treated tooth. The patient must also wait for the anesthesia to wear off to avoid injuring themselves while eating—for example, by burning themselves or biting their tongue or cheek.
Can I have dental work done if I have a cold sore?
Unfortunately, no. During the procedure, the virus may spread to the entire surface of the lips, the oral mucosa, and even the nostrils. In addition, the dentist and staff may become infected with the virus. Even if the sore on the lip has scabbed over, it may become irritated during the procedure, leading to reinfection of the wound.
Why is an in-office consultation necessary, and why isn't an X-ray or panoramic X-ray alone sufficient?
During a consultation at the dentist’s office, the oral mucosa, gums, and tongue are also examined. With only an X-ray available, the dentist is unable to determine whether there are other dental problems, what the patient’s oral hygiene is like, or whether there is tooth mobility, etc. Based on the clinical examination and radiographic findings, the dentist works with the patient to develop a treatment plan.
