Digital Smile Planning

Comprehensive diagnostics and Digital Smile Design (DSD) are modern technologies that help make patients’ dreams of a beautiful smile come true. Thanks to Digital Smile Design, patients can see the results of their treatment even before it begins. How does it work?

1 Step

Consultation visit. The dentist assesses the scope of comprehensive treatment, discusses the patient’s expectations regarding the final result, and takes photographs or facial scans—including CBCT scans—as well as intraoral diagnostic scans, all of which are essential for treatment planning. The resulting portfolio will be used to create a digital smile design.

2 Step

Aesthetic and Functional Analysis. At Impladent, a new smile is meant to be not only beautiful, but above all, functional. We’ll ensure not only the aesthetics of your teeth but also proper bite alignment, natural jaw movement, and the proper functioning of your temporomandibular joints. We analyze each patient’s case individually to ensure that even the smallest details of treatment are taken care of.

3 Step

“Virtual Smile.” A visualization of the new smile is reviewed with the patient, and adjustments are made. Initial designs and their fit are tested on screen, without the patient’s involvement. We try on prototypes made of composite resin or PMMA in the patient’s mouth, and this procedure eliminates potential errors.

A key element of therapy is determining the correct position of the lower jaw within the joints; we call this the central relation (CR)

Treatment for patients who need to replace multiple missing teeth, who wish to improve the aesthetics of their smile using crowns and veneers, as well as patients with worn-down teeth, must be carefully planned. Treatment that alters a patient’s occlusal relationships (the shape and height of the teeth) leads to a different position of the head and jaw in the temporomandibular joints. Most patients are familiar with the feeling of discomfort when a filling is too high. Often, this very slight discrepancy causes significant discomfort and leads to joint pain and even headaches. In the case of a filling, these are fractions of a millimeter; in the case of occlusal reconstruction, the height varies from a few to over a dozen millimeters. This process requires the joint to adapt to the new position of the condyle within the glenoid fossa.

Comprehensive Treatment, Step by Step

1 Step

Patients with parafunctional habits typically develop pathological muscle movements—often due to abnormal mandibular joint relationships, malocclusions, or missing teeth—which lead to tooth wear. One component of treating parafunctional habits and establishing a central occlusion is splint therapy and deprogramming (elimination of muscle habits). Often, a prosthodontist also recommends complementary physical therapy.

2 Step

The stage of reshaping the teeth requires the use of temporary resin restorations so that the patient can test the functionality and aesthetics of the teeth with their new shape and increased height. This is also the stage during which the temporomandibular joint adjusts to the changes.

3 Step

Modern prosthetic treatment is extremely precise. Using an optical scanner, we transfer the shape of the temporary restorations to a computer program and modify the original tooth design by incorporating all necessary adjustments. The final ceramic restoration is fabricated in accordance with the aesthetics and bite approved by the patient.
