Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Snoring

It is a sound caused by the vibration of soft tissues in the upper respiratory tract during sleep. It is most often the result of anatomical abnormalities of the nose or throat, or malocclusion. Although it is sometimes downplayed, it can significantly impair sleep quality—both for the person who snores and for their loved ones.

A much more serious problem, however, is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which, according to statistics, affects as many as 4% of the population. It involves repeated episodes of complete cessation of breathing during sleep—when the tongue collapses and blocks the airway for at least 10 seconds, causing a drop in oxygen saturation of at least 4%. Untreated sleep apnea leads to:

  • chronic fatigue and difficulty concentrating,
  • hypertension and cardiovascular diseases,
  • an increased risk of stroke and heart attack,
  • type 2 diabetes.

Treatment for Snoring and Sleep Apnea in Gdańsk

At the Impladent Medical & Dental Clinic, we take a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach. Each patient undergoes a detailed diagnostic evaluation, and we develop a treatment plan together—with the involvement of a dentist, an ENT specialist, and, if necessary, other specialists.

Treatments for snoring and OSA:

  • NightLase® laser therapy to increase the tone of throat tissues,
  • laser uvulophalyngoplasty,
  • orthodontic treatment (e.g., for malocclusions),
  • orthognathic surgery for more severe anatomical abnormalities – bimaxillary advancement
  • implant and prosthetic treatment to support proper occlusal conditions,
  • Dental treatment to eliminate factors that contribute to snoring.

Laser Therapy – An Effective and Painless Solution

Modern snoring treatment at our clinic includes laser procedures that safely and comfortably reduce the intensity of snoring and the frequency of apnea episodes.

  • The procedure does not require anesthesia,
  • It is painless and takes about a dozen or so minutes,
  • The laser light heats the tissues, causing collagen to contract, which leads to their stiffening,
  • reduces vibrations of the soft palate and uvula,
  • improves airway patency.

The full procedure consists of three sessions performed several weeks apart. The results last up to a year, and the treatment can be safely repeated.
