Temporomandibular Joint Problems
Pain and clicking in the temporomandibular joints are symptoms that should not be ignored. They may indicate progressive changes in joint structure, as well as chronic muscle tension resulting from parafunctional occlusal habits (e.g., teeth grinding, abnormal jaw movements). Most often, these symptoms are caused by malocclusion, pathological tooth wear, or the aftermath of prosthetic treatment involving forced occlusion. Very often, emotional tension, stress, or neurological problems exacerbate or trigger these symptoms.
If left untreated, they lead to wear on the tooth surfaces, damage to the cartilage, and degenerative changes affecting all components of the joints. The forced positioning of the lower jaw within the joint further exacerbates the problem, causing pain, clicking, and limited mobility.
How does the treatment work?
Patients with temporomandibular joint disorders require a thorough diagnosis to identify the source of the problem and select an effective treatment. Depending on individual needs, we use various approaches:
- orthodontic treatment—to correct the bite and restore proper joint balance,
- prosthetic treatment – for excessively worn teeth that require restoration,
- Dental physical therapy—which supports treatment by relaxing tense muscles and improving joint function.
Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual to address the root cause of the condition, not just its symptoms. Thanks to modern diagnostic methods and interdisciplinary care provided by specialists, we effectively restore comfort, health, and full functionality to the temporomandibular joints.
